Radiant Autumn

RADIANT AUTUMN

Radiant Autumn

RADIANT AUTUMN

SUMMARY

Autumn is, for many reasons, my favorite season of the year. Something about the combination of that cool, crisp air . . . the ability to wear scarves and cardigans . . . the beautiful warm colors of the leaves . . . the holidays . . . marching band season . . . and of course, pumpkin spice lattés, all rolled into one, truly make autumn a wonderful season. But this piece is not inspired by my daily activities with marching band, nor by pumpkin spice lattés. Radiant Autumn, written for flute, clarinet, bassoon, bass clarinet, and marimba, is split into two sections. The first section is inspired by the sheer serenity of viewing all of the radiant colors that surround us in nature once autumn hits, combined with the cool, crisp breeze of dropping temperatures whisking by our faces. The second section is inspired by the vast array of falling leaves rolling around through the air and in the grass as the wind starts to pick up; a beautiful sight.

ONYX WALTZ

Onyx Waltz

ONYX WALTZ

SUMMARY

Onyx Waltz is a dark and carnival-like piece for solo piano that brings to mind imagery of being trapped in a funhouse mirror maze of sorts. The title further evokes this dark imagery, as onyx is a jet-black color. The piece heavily explores the tritone relationship through modulation and melodic expression, while also exploring the use of chromatic mediants and the whole-tone scale, and elements of waltz. The music plays with expectation in that conclusions of phrases and the use of melody and meter usually never quite sound like what your ear would normally expect. Through the frequent use of irregular meter in varying forms of 5, 7, and 11, the “waltz” frequently sounds broken and fragmented, taking away the usual waltz pattern of straight threes, creating pervasive twists and turns and unpredictability. The piece has numerous exchanges between sections of eerie calmness and frenetic chaos, as you never quite know what will happen when you’re trapped and lost inside of a mirror maze. Let your imagination run free... and welcome to the funhouse!

INCESSANCY

Incessancy

INCESSANCY

SUMMARY

Incessancy is a moto perpetuo for solo violin. The title, which means to continue without pause or interruption, is derived from two key elements of the piece: the nonstop movement of the melody, and the constant changes in pitch center. The longest pauses in the piece are sixteenth rests, and are there to maintain rhythmic interest and to make any difficult reaches for the player slightly more attainable. Both of these elements make the piece both exhilarating and exhausting for both the performer and the listener. The constant virtuosic playing required by the performer and changes in pitch centers, rhythmic and melodic content, and meter drive the piece to end on a resolute note. Instead, after going through the all of the trials of the piece, the piece ends on a deceptive and cliffhanger note, a half-step above the tonic that used in the last section of the piece, adding to the “incessance”.
